OUR ADVENTURES AT THE INDIAN CAVE, NEBRASKA

Located on the Nemaha / Richardson County line, the Nebraska Games and Parks Commission acquired this tract in 1962. The park covers some 3,000 acres, including 2,386 acres of timber. The Missouri River runs along the eastern edge of the park and offers beautiful nature scenes throughout the year.

It is believed that Indian Cave has existed for several thousand years, a natural formation with ancient Indian pictures carved into the walls of the cave. The cultural origin and period in history remain a mystery. These relics are a fragile reminder of a previous time and age. Speaking of history, we visited the reconstructed mid-19th Century river settlement known as St. Deroin, the first town site in Nemaha County.

This was indeed a memorable adventure. I will let the pictures tell the story. We began the day by having a picnic. Near our picnic spot was a playground where the kids and adults had so much fun. I loved to see my mom on the swings and on the merry go round. She is very playfu and young at heart. After play time, we sat at the picnic table and had yummy sandwitches, fruits and veggies (thanks to Grandma Judy and Papa Ron). After the picnic lunch, we drove to another spot with some old structures used by piooners where we watched candle making. There were some blacksmiths working there too. We then went to the school that was built by the piooneers (just one classroom). There was another little building with a gentleman making some brooms. We then drove to the cave itself near the Missouri River and later headed home to cool at the pool in Humbolt. Later we returned to Grandma Judy's house for dinner and a surprise Cake to celebrate my wedding anniversary and Esther's birthday. It was one awesome adventure.
